We are pleased to announce the successful completion of a remarkable 1.5-hectare family farm project in Bensafrim, Portugal. This project exemplifies our dedication to regenerative design, seamlessly integrating ecological principles with modern farming techniques to establish a balanced and productive environment.
From Concept to Creation
The vision for this 1.5-hectare family farm was clear from the start: to create a self-sufficient, ecologically sound agricultural haven that supports both the family’s needs and the natural environment. Located in the charming village of Bensafrim in the Algarve region, the project took advantage of the area’s unique climate and landscape to develop a thriving farm that would serve as a model of regenerative living.
Our design process was holistic and collaborative, involving the family at every step to ensure their goals and values were fully integrated. This project, executed under our Masterplan II design service, includes comprehensive plantation plans for every zone and a higher level of detail to ensure long-term success.
Key Objectives and Design Features
Enhanced Landscape Hydration and Water Management
Our design prioritized enhancing landscape hydration through advanced water management techniques. By strategically incorporating features like swales, ponds, and canals, we aimed to optimize rainfall retention and infiltration, ensuring the farm remains resilient throughout the seasons.
Improved Access and Thoughtful Infrastructure
Creating a functional farm required thoughtful planning of access roads and pathways. These elements not only facilitate easy navigation but also support the day-to-day operations and long-term maintenance of the farm, ensuring efficiency and accessibility.
Restoration of Ecological Balance and Services
Our approach focused on restoring natural ecological patterns to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services. From improving pollination to fostering natural pest control and soil regeneration, our design aimed to create a thriving environment where nature and agriculture coexist harmoniously.
Regenerative Practices for Soil Health
To nurture healthy soil, we implemented regenerative practices such as composting, cover cropping, and minimal tillage. These methods promote soil fertility and structure, providing a sustainable foundation for robust crop growth and long-term agricultural viability.
Creation of Diverse and Productive Zones
The farm was meticulously planned and zoned to accommodate a variety of agricultural activities, including vegetable gardens and orchards. This approach not only maximizes productivity but also ensures sustainable land use practices that support a diverse range of crops and habitats.
Preservation and Enhancement of Wetlands
Protecting existing wetlands and creating new ones was essential for enhancing biodiversity and managing water resources effectively. These wetland areas play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and providing habitats for local wildlife.
Sustainable Forest Management
Our commitment to regeneration extended to forest management, where we focused on preserving and expanding forested areas with diverse tree species. This initiative enhances ecosystem resilience, supports biodiversity, and contributes to the overall health of the farm environment.
Promoting Biodiversity and Habitat Creation
Dedicated efforts were made to promote biodiversity by planting native species, establishing wildlife corridors, and creating habitats for pollinators. These initiative
Conclusion
The completion of the Bensafrim Family Farm project is a testament to our commitment to regenerative practices and environmental stewardship. At Terracrua Design, we are proud to have collaborated on a project that not only regenerates agricultural productivity but also nurtures and enhances the natural landscape.
