Embarking on a transformative journey to Oklahoma, Nuno Santos and André Carvalho from Terracrua Design found themselves captivated by the vastness of the United States’ heartland.

Amidst the vast landscapes of Oklahoma, the warmth of Southern hospitality enveloped the Terracrua Design team. From Frederick to Fargo, the genuine friendliness of the people became an integral part of the journey, creating a welcoming atmosphere that extended beyond the boundaries of each project.

The focal point of their exploration was a 400-hectare ranch in Frederick, a blend of cattle and grain operations facing challenges posed by erosion and relentless winds.

This called for a delicate approach to enhance fertility while preserving the integrity of the landscape.

For eight immersive days in Frederick, the Terracrua Design team delved deep into the terrain, utilizing tools like QGIS and drones to gather meticulous data.

The focus extended beyond numerical precision, encompassing the identification of plant species crucial for aligning with the region’s natural succession. It was a dance with nature, weaving a story of permanence not just for the hedges but for the entire tapestry of permanent vegetation.

Beyond the ranch boundaries, the exploration extended to the Wichita Natural Reserve, Hackberry Flats, and the Red River, each bearing unique hues and textures that whispered tales of resilience and beauty, influencing the project’s vision.

In the heart of Frederick, the groundwork for the project was intricately laid, emphasizing the vital elements of water and access. These were not merely technical aspects but threads woven into the fabric of the land, respecting its contours and natural rhythms.

Connecting with the diligent team at Kinder Equipment, stewards of the pasture operation, became a source of inspiration. Their commitment to the land, revealed through seasonal strategies and rotational techniques, and are a prime stakeholder in the design process. With Dakota at the Kinder equipment, we learned about the machinery being used at the farm, and about their calendar, in order to understand the cattle and grain seasons, and to be able to optimize the operation.

Knowing the size of the main tools, some with 12 meters, we can now start planning the keyline pasture and its hedgerows.

The journey commenced with a pilgrimage to Fargo Ranch, a sprawling 4,500-hectare cattle haven in Northwest Oklahoma. This visit wasn’t just about project potential; it was a moment of quiet observation, absorbing the undulating landscapes and expansive skies that define the region.

The timeline unfolded, tracing the rhythm of the land from arrival on November 6th to the exploration of Fargo Ranch on the 7th. South Oklahoma became the team’s temporary home until the 15th, allowing us to immerse in the unique contours of the 400-hectare farm in Frederick. It was a poignant experience, where the rich tapestry of American culture, geography, and biology unfolded before our eyes.

As Terracrua Design bids farewell to Oklahoma, we carry not just data but a deep appreciation for the humility and beauty of this landscape. The journey might have concluded, but the echoes of wind-swept prairies and the silent stories of the Red River linger, shaping the roots of a collaborative future between Terracrua Design and the enchanting landscapes of Oklahoma. Stay tuned for more, as our commitment to regeneration and regenerative design continues to blossom.
