During our visit to Vale das Casas Novas today, led by Nuno Mamede Santos and Miguel Madeira, our team had the privilege of formally delivering the project and efficiently coordinating its initial implementation. We were warmly welcomed by the dedicated team at Vale das Casas Novas, including Lieke and their family, all of whom were genuinely excited about the progress made on their property.

A crucial task during this implementation phase involved restoring and enhancing the margins of a small watercourse. Our objective was to enhance its functionality and ecological significance within the overarching design. With this action, the East stream margin is now prepared for a riparian restoration intervention, replacing the “silvas” with willows, alder, elder, and more. Here are several key reasons highlighting the importance of this restoration:

Enhanced Biodiversity: By meticulously restoring and maintaining the stream margins, we are creating a diverse habitat that can support a wide range of plant and animal species. Riparian zones, like those found along stream margins, are known for their high biodiversity. These areas provide nesting sites for birds, shelter for aquatic life, and habitat for various insects and amphibians.

Improved Water Quality: The restoration of stream margins can significantly contribute to improved water quality. The plants and vegetation along the stream act as a natural filter, trapping sediments and pollutants before they reach the water. This helps to maintain the quality of the stream, benefiting not only the ecosystem but also downstream communities that rely on clean water.

Erosion Control: Properly managed stream margins are effective in controlling erosion. The roots of plants stabilize the soil along the banks, preventing erosion caused by high water flow or heavy rainfall. This, in turn, helps maintain the integrity of the stream’s course and reduces the risk of sedimentation downstream.

Flood Mitigation: Restoring stream margins can play a role in flood mitigation. The vegetation and properly managed meadows can absorb excess water during periods of heavy rainfall, reducing the likelihood of flooding in the surrounding areas.

Improved Aesthetics: Beyond the ecological benefits, a well-restored stream margin enhances the overall aesthetics of the project. It provides a visually appealing natural feature, enhancing the overall experience for residents and visitors.

Educational Opportunities: A restored stream margin can serve as an educational resource. It offers opportunities for residents and visitors to learn about the importance of riparian ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainable land management practices.

Long-term Sustainability: A properly restored stream margin is an investment in the long-term sustainability of the ecosystem. It contributes to the resilience of the ecosystem against environmental stressors and ensures that the area remains healthy and functional for generations to come.

Furthermore, our focus extended to the accessibility of the main roads and parking areas, ensuring convenient access and parking facilities for both residents and visitors. This step is fundamental in creating a welcoming and functional environment within the project area.

Throughout our visit, our team collaborated closely with the Casas Novas team, engaging in productive discussions about the implementation process and addressing any questions or concerns they had. Effective communication and collaboration were pivotal in ensuring the smooth progression of the project, aligning it with the vision outlined in the regenerative masterplan.

And we are pleased to report that we trained the Vale das Casas Novas team on the use of the GPS tablet. This training has been a resounding success, with the team quickly adapting to the technology and effectively utilizing it in their work.

Our visit to Vale das Casas Novas, led by Nuno Mamede Santos and Miguel Madeira, proved to be a resounding success, marking the official delivery of the project and the coordination of its initial implementation efforts. We eagerly anticipate witnessing the positive impact of the project as it unfolds in the coming months.

Together, we’re not only transforming a property but also nurturing a vision of a regenerative future. We are truly excited about the positive impact our work will have on this remarkable community and the environment. As we move forward, let’s continue to work hand in hand, making a difference that will be felt for generations to come. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this inspiring journey.
